The Municipio Xalapa is one of 212 Municipios in the Mexican state of Veracruz . The municipality is practically congruent with the city of Xalapa , the capital of the state of Veracruz.

The municipality of Xalapa is located in the eastern foothills of the Cofre de Perote and is at an altitude between 700 and 1,600 meters above sea level. The administrative unit is limited by six neighboring municipalities:

The municipality Xalapa has an area of ​​124.4 km², of which around 50 percent of the area is the urban area of ​​the city of Xalapa.

Current key figures

A total of 480,841 inhabitants lived in the municipality in 2015, with the gender ratio being relatively balanced at 52.9 percent women to 47.1 percent men.

The population lived in 139,297 houses, with 99.1 percent of the water supply connected. In 2015, 99.6 percent had a power connection. 40.5 percent of all households had a car, 96.8 percent a television, almost every second household had a computer and an Internet connection. Cell phones were found in 90.1 percent of households.

With these key figures, the municipality of Xalapa is one of the most developed municipalities in the state of Veracruz. This is due to the fact that the city of Xalapa makes up a large part of the municipality.

For the year 2017, with 502,151 inhabitants, the size of half a million inhabitants was projected for the first time. That would be around 6.15 percent of the population of the state of Veracruz.

Historical development

In the 1910 census , the then Canton Jalapa comprised 92,249 inhabitants. By far the largest branch of employment was agriculture (men) and household chores (women). Nevertheless, the figures at that time cannot be included in the table of development below, as today's Municipios have a different area than the cantons of that time .

Reliable data on the population development in the Municipio Xalapa (or, according to the old spelling, Municipio Jalapa ) have been available since 1930. There has been a significant population growth since 1960. In the last few decades the municipality's population grew between 0.99 percent (2000-2005) and 3.54 percent (1995-2000).
