Murat Ülker (born March 21, 1959 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish businessman and chairman of Yıldız Holding , the largest food company in Turkey . Yıldız Holding owns companies such as Ülker , Godiva Chocolatier , Pladis and Şok . 2019 he was with a fortune of 3.7 billion US dollars the second richest Turk .

Life

Murat Ülker was born in Istanbul in 1959 as the son of Sabri Ülker and Güzide İman. He attended high school in Istanbul and graduated from Boğaziçi Üniversitesi in business administration. In 1982 he studied abroad at the American Institute of Baking (AIB) and at the Central Technical College of the German Confectionery Industry (ZDS) and completed an apprenticeship with the Continental Baking Company in the United States.

In 1984, Ülker joined the Ülker Group, which belongs to Yıldız Holding, as a control coordinator. In the following years he worked as deputy general manager for companies and later as general manager. In 2000, Ülker became CEO of Yıldız Holding before becoming its chairman in 2008. Under his leadership the company expanded internationally and bought u. a. the Belgian chocolate manufacturer Godiva Chocolatier.

Private

Ülker is married and has three children.

In 2009 the Ülker family founded the Sabri-Ülker Foundation, which aims to make a sustainable contribution to public health in the area of ​​nutrition. In 2014, the Ülker family donated $ 24 million to Harvard University . The funding, spread over 10 years, was used to establish the Sabri-Ülker Center for Nutrition, Genetics and Metabolic Research at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health . The center looks at chronic and complex diseases to help people with diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease .

Ülker was the owner of the Turkish basketball club Ülkerspor . The club was later merged with the Fenerbahçe basketball division .
