Murray Royal Hospital

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Murray Royal Hospital , formerly James Murray's Royal Asylum and James Murray's Royal Mental Hospital , a psychiatric hospital in the Scottish city of Perth in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1977 the historic clinic buildings were included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. It was upgraded to the highest monument category A in 2014. Only a few examples of early 19th century architecture of a psychiatric facility in Scotland have survived, of which the Murray Royal Hospital is the oldest.

history

Esquire James Murray , originally from Perth, left a sum of £ 32,000 to help build a mental health clinic in 1821. For this purpose, the caretakers acquired around 4.9 hectares of land on the outskirts of Perth for £ 2,500  . William Burn was entrusted with planning the clinic. The construction project cost £ 20,000. The facility, which was planned to accommodate 100 patients, opened on July 1, 1827. In 1834, additions designed by Burn were also completed, increasing the capacity by 60 seats. The cost of the extension was £ 9,063. During the century the adjacent Pitcullen House was bought up. The aim was to build an extension for financially well-off patients, but this was never implemented. Pitcullen House, however, served the facility manager as a residential building. Furthermore, a farm was acquired in order to integrate patients into agricultural work. Like much of the land at Pitcullen House, however, it was only leased and never integrated into the clinic. The Murray Royal Asylum was expanded in 1888 based on a design by Andrew Heiton .

Between 1948 and 1950 the facility was called James Murray's Royal Mental Hospital . Then it was renamed the Murray Royal Hospital . After the clinic was operated in the historic buildings into the 21st century, new buildings were built on the site between 2010 and 2012. The total cost of the construction was around £ 75 million. With the opening by First Minister Alex Salmond on June 14, 2012, the historic buildings became obsolete. In the same year they were added to the register of endangered buildings in Scotland. While a conversion, preferably into living space, has been discussed since then, the condition of the buildings in 2014 was rated as good with moderate risk.

description

The three-story Murray Royal Hospital stands on a hill on the eastern edge of Perth. Structurally, it shows the usual features of the early psychiatric facility built during this period. Two wings extend from an octagonal central building with a dome at the end, through which the gender separation was ensured. The masonry consists of sandstone blocks , with openings in a different color. The entrance area is designed with Doric columns. The concluding hip roofs are covered with gray slate.
