The Nevado Mururata , a glistening ramp made of ice and snow that rises from 5000 to almost 6000 meters, is only 15 km north of the more famous Illimani and, like this, is part of the backdrop of La Paz . At the same time, it crowns the panorama of the tourist destination Coroico, which is 4000 m lower on the eastern roof of the Cordillere .
For the legend of the history of the origin of this mountain with the name "Without a head" see under Illimani .
While the 1000 m high south face of the mountain is reserved for experienced Andinists, an ascent of the Kopflos is "only" a question of height adjustment and fitness. The Mururata was first climbed by Adolf Schulze in 1915.
How to get there: From the Zona Sur in La Paz over the pass Cuesta de las Ánimas (3,950 m) to Ventilla. There, turn left into the valley towards the Takesi Trail , until after Choquequta a four-wheel drive leads up to the right to the base camp (4,730 m) at the COTEL telecommunications station ("Antenas") (44 km, approx. 2.5 hours).
Ascent: Following the cairns to a conspicuously cubic block over the moraine, through easy climbing terrain (I – II) to the glacier tongue (5,100 m) and in approx. 7 hours to the highest point. Total return approx. 3.5 hours. If the conditions are good, this can also be done as a ski tour.
