Musée Picasso Antibes
The Picasso Museum in Antibes is a French museum on the Côte d'Azur , Alpes-Maritimes department , Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .
It is located in a castle named Chateau Grimaldi after the Grimaldi family . The castle is in close proximity to the sea.
Permanent exhibition
In addition to pictures by Picasso , ceramics and sculptures are on display (on the terrace), as well as works by Max Ernst , Miró and other artists of the 20th century.
history
The castle was built in the 12th century. The Grimaldi family had used it since 1385. In 1608, under King Henri IV , it came into possession of the French crown. It was, among other things, the seat of the governor , town hall and barracks .
In 1925 the castle became the Musée Grimaldi . Picasso had a studio here from July to December 1946 . He donated 23 paintings to the community and later became an honorary citizen in Antibes . A museum in his honor was opened here on December 27, 1966. Jacqueline Picasso bequeathed further works to the museum in 1990.
