The subclavius muscle ( Latin for " subclavian muscle ") arises on the breastbone at the level of the first rib and runs on the underside of the collarbone ( clavicle ) in a bone groove ( sulcus musculi subclavii ).
On the one hand, it stabilizes the collarbone against the breastbone and, on the other hand, it pulls the collarbone forward and downward. It cushions the subclavian artery and vein as well as the brachial plexus against the collarbone. The blood supply is provided by the superior thoracic artery .
variation
Attachment to the raven beak process (coracoid process) instead of the clavicle or both to the clavicle and the coracoid process.
clinic
If the pectoralis minor muscle is missing, the subclavius muscle is greatly enlarged due to the considerable strain ( hypertrophy ).
