The Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao is one of the most important museums in Spain and has more than 8000 works in its collection, covering different time periods from the 12th century to the present day. The collection contains old, modern and contemporary art and shows u. a. some paintings from the Spanish and Flemish Schools and a collection of Basque artists.

Basque artist

The museum in Bilbao not only has the most important collection of works by Basque artists, but is also the most important institution in terms of collecting documents and information about the artists themselves. The painter Manuel Losada from Bilbao was one of the museum's greatest patrons and his first Director. Aurelio Arteta, also a painter from Bilbao, was the first director of the Museo de Arte Moderno. The collection of today's museum is a summary of the collection of the Museo de Bellas Artes, founded in 1914, and the Museo de Arte Moderno from 1924. The museum received additional works from local institutions and private donors, as well as through acquisitions by the museum itself, which were used to raise the profile contributed to the collection.
