In 1948 the production of records on a converted leather press began in Nortorf in a converted leather factory after Telefunken Schallplatten GmbH had moved from Berlin to Nortorf. In the first year, 24,278 records were produced. In 1949 seven mechanical toggle presses were installed and annual production increased to 400,000 records. In June 1950 the 1,000,000th record was produced in Nortorf and the TELDEC Schallplatten-Gesellschaft GmbH was founded in Hamburg. The company premises were expanded in 1952 with the acquisition of the Ewald Köster leather factory. A shellac record was last pressed in 1959. By 1987, a total of 850,000,000 shellac and vinyl records had left the Teldec record factory.
