history

The museum opened in 1957 on a small exhibition space. The basis was the private collection of a shareholder in the then Fürstenberg stock corporation . The scientific supervision of the exhibition was initially provided by the historian and later director of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum Rolf Hagen . In the 1960s, targeted collecting began, which also resulted in repurchases from the art trade.

The museum has been located in the historic castle building, which was used for porcelain production from 1747 to 1972, since a renovation in 1978. After a further renovation in 1991, exhibition rooms were added on the upper floor, so that the expansion enabled a more spacious exhibition concept. In 2015 the museum was certified with the Lower Saxony and Bremen museum quality seal. Extensive renovation and renovation work was carried out between 2015 and 2017, during which the exhibition was redesigned.

The reopening of the museum took place in March 2017 with a ceremony in the presence of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil . In addition to the newly designed permanent exhibition, the museum also houses a visitors' workshop and themed special exhibitions.

The new foam magazine has been housed in one of the oldest rooms in the castle since May 2018. Precious figures from the 18th century, curious equipment from the 19th century or rare design icons from the 20th century are displayed in a central glass cube. In addition, porcelain art from the early days of the manufactory is presented in a floor-to-ceiling wall cabinet with the Reichmann collection.

Christian Lechelt has been running the museum since October 2016 , who was previously the project manager for the redesign of the exhibition.
