The museum in the Seelhaus is the municipal museum of Bopfingen in the Ostalb district . It houses archaeological exhibits from the region and an exhibition on the city's history.

The Seelhaus

In 1505 the half-timbered house was built as a lake house for the care of old and needy people from the imperial city . A foundation of the citizenship provided the means for the construction and operation, whereby the donors did both for the "poor souls" and for their own salvation. In the Seelhaus, Sisters from the Soul initially looked after the residents, after the Thirty Years' War a couple of administrators took over the organization. The foundation also included land that was used for agriculture. After the First World War, the foundation fell victim to inflation and the house was used as a residential building with several apartments. In 1987, after a thorough renovation, the Seelhaus was converted into a municipal museum.

A 20 km long hiking trail begins in front of the museum and leads to the Ipf and many archaeological sites in the area.

View through the ground floor of the museum in the Seelhaus

The permanent exhibition begins on the ground floor with a brief introduction to the geology of the region. This is followed by ceramics and tools from the Neolithic Age, including reconstructions, for example a sickle with a flint insert and a shanked dome . The Bronze Age is represented by grave pottery from the barrows of Schweindorf (Neresheim) . The transition to the Iron Age is formed by ceramics from cremation graves from the late urn fields - and from the Hallstatt period from Bopfingen-Trochtelfingen (8th / 7th centuries BC).

With pottery shards from the Ipf, settlement activity on the mountain in the Neolithic Age ( Rössen culture ), the Urnfield Age and the Latène Age is demonstrated. From the early Celtic rectangular courtyards in the nearby hamlet of Osterholz , jewelry such as glass beads and fibulae are exhibited, as well as shards of disc-turned ceramics. The fast-turning potter's wheel has only been known in southern Germany since the late Hallstatt period and the broken fragments thus prove this manufacturing technique for the region around the Ipf. This is taken as an indication of the function of the Ipf as a Celtic prince seat. There are also finds from long-distance imports - fragments of an Attic , red-figure drinking bowl were unearthed in the cistern of a rectangular courtyard . Another indication is the discovery of two large grave mounds, of which "Mound 2" was excavated in 2003. The museum exhibits the Hallstatt period dishes from this women's grave. It is partly smooth, partly incised black and red ceramic with white engobe in the incised lines. It appears in the late 7th or early 6th century BC. Dated.

City history collection

Information showcases on the numerous sub-locations of Bopfingen are located on the upper floor of the museum. One room is dedicated to the political history of the city, another to the local church history. Further topics are agriculture, textile production and the leather industry, as well as the production of faience , stoneware and pottery . Documents, tools and everyday objects show the changes in economic and social life over the centuries. The history of the Seelhaus itself is also presented in a small room.
