Music for Egon Schiele is a music album by the post-rock band Rachel’s around the pianist Rachel Grimes from Louisville . The avant-garde magazine The Wire has Music for Egon Schiele in its list The Wire's “100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening)” . The album was released in 1996 on the Quarterstick record label .

History and style of music

Rachel Grimes wrote the music for the album for the performance of the dance theater piece Egon Schiele about the life of the expressionist Austrian painter of the same name . The piece was produced in 1995 by Stephan Mazurek with the Itinerant Theater Guild of the University of Illinois at Chicago . At the theatrical performance, the musicians involved were alongside Rachel Grimes on the piano, Alyson Berger ( cello ) and Juan Carlos Siviero ( viola ). The studio album was recorded with Christian Frederickson from the Rachel’s on viola and Wendy Doyle on cello. Bob Weston , who was in charge of recording , and Jason B. Noble , who acts as producer , are also part of the regular Rachel project , which featured up to 20 band members on other releases.

Although the band Rachel’s is more likely to be classified as post-rock, Music for Egon Schiele with its classical trio line-up can better be classified under the term “modern chamber music ”. The music is rather melancholy , melancholy and almost minimalistic . The music and title of the pieces refer to stations in Schiele's life and work, as well as friends and family - such as his sister Gertie and his partner and model Wally Neuzil or his friend Mime van Osen, who was also portrayed several times by the painter.

The cardboard sepia-colored CD cover with pictures of Schiele and a booklet with information on the theater production and Schiele's life and work is designed in a strikingly artistic way .

reception

Also used on the CD cover: Nude girl with crossed arms

The album received consistently positive reviews. The magazine Intro wrote: “... Nonetheless, the pieces were composed into pictures, the sound was painted. The close connection to the paintings gives the music an incredibly lively visual power, which in turn sets pictures in motion, so that Schiele does not remain in his self-portraits, which he painted countless, but rather approaches a new event in his life in the next moment, which he then achieves in the next piece. […] The story of the record has seldom been so important to me. I would almost like to assume that the content of this album can only be determined with the appropriate information. "

Bret Love wrote on the Allmusic music database : “… the gentle majesty of 'Music for Egon Schiele' is a welcome change of pace for anyone bored with popular music forms, transporting the listener's mood entirely.” ( “… The gentle majesty of 'Music for Egon Schiele 'means a welcome change of pace for all those who are bored with popular forms of music, it completely changes the mood of the listener. " )
