The music ensembles of the Munich University of Applied Sciences are institutions of the General Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies faculty at the Munich University of Applied Sciences . The university has three music ensembles , the symphony orchestra, the choir and the big band.

Music at the Faculty of General Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies

In contrast to the other faculties, the Faculty of General Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies (Faculty 13) at Munich University of Applied Sciences does not offer a course of its own, but only individual subjects, from which students of the other courses of study take a certain number of "general academic electives" during their studies have to. In addition, these subjects can also be taken as voluntary electives.

These subjects include those in the field of music . In addition to lectures on music theory , music history , etc., musical internships are also offered, which can be completed in the symphony orchestra , in the choir and in the big band . As a rule, a new program is studied every semester, larger programs also over two semesters. In the case of the compulsory elective subject, a practical exam takes place towards the end of the semester, during which parts of the semester program must be presented.

The symphony orchestra was founded in 1952 by Joseph Suder at what was then the Oskar von Miller Polytechnic, one of the forerunners of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. In 1962 he handed over the leadership of the symphony orchestra to his son Alexander Suder, who also became the first professor of musicology at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, which was founded in 1972 from several predecessor institutes (formerly known as the Munich University of Applied Sciences). After Alexander Suder's retirement, his successor Theodor Schmitt took over the direction of the symphony orchestra in 1991.

In 2007 the orchestra had around 65 members. Due to its function as a "compulsory optional subject", the line-up changes every semester. Especially with the strings, there are major changes every semester. In addition to the students who take the symphony orchestra as a compulsory elective or as a voluntary subject and thus change frequently, a core of alumni and members from outside the university has also formed, which ensure a certain continuity.

Rehearsals take place once a week in the evening during the semester; In addition, there will be a rehearsal weekend and some special rehearsals before the performances.

In addition to pure orchestral works, works for choir and orchestra are also rehearsed in the symphony orchestra in order to prepare joint performances with the choir.
