Mustafa Memeti

Mustafa Memeti (born August 20, 1962 in Žujince , Opština Preševo , Serbia , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Swiss imam .

Memeti is an imam and head of the Muslim Association of Bern and President of the Board of the Albanian Islamic Association of Switzerland. He also works as a pastor in the Thorberg prison . Memeti and his association take part in the interreligious project House of Religions . In 2014 he was named “Swiss of the Year” by the Sunday newspaper , because he stands up against extremism and for peaceful coexistence.

Life

Mustafa Memeti was born in southern Serbia as the fourth of eight children of Vaxhid Memeti. He attended elementary school in his birthplace and at the age of 13 went to the Arab world to study. He studied in Syria, Tunisia and then in Saudi Arabia, at the Islamic University in Medina , Islamic law and hadith studies .

Memeti has lived in Switzerland since around 1988 and was naturalized in 2005. He is married, has three children and lives in the agglomeration of Bern.
