The Muttersbergseilbahn is a cable car in Bludenz and Nüziders in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . It connects a valley station at around 679  m above sea level. A. in Bludenz-Hinterplärsch (Galgentobel) with the mountain station at 1397 meters near the 1401 m high Madeisakopf , which is colloquially called Muttersberg , and is located in the municipality of Nüziders. In a narrower sense, the Muttersberg is the scattered settlement in the south and south-east slopes of the Hohe Fraßen .

history

In the vicinity of today's valley station there were bathing huts until around 1838, in which the healing spring located here was used (see: Bad Fohrenburg ).

prehistory

On May 24, 1946 , the first meeting of a "proponent committee" took place under the direction of the then Vice Mayor of Bludenz, Kommerzialrat Xaver Muther, and it was decided to build a passenger cable car to the Muttersberg. The further preparatory work and securing the financing needed around ten years until the cable car company was founded.

Foundation of the cable car company

On July 9, 1955, the  articles of association of the “Personenseilbahn Bludenz-Muttersberg Gesellschaft mbH” with a share capital of S 1,406,000.- were notarized by 164 shareholders in the “Bludenzerhof” hotel .

The first commercial managing director of the cable car company was KR Xaver Muther (until 1958). Ing.Fritz Huber (until 1960) became the first technical managing director of the cable car company.

Further planning

The mountain station has already been built in a reinforced construction, as a later extension of the cable car from Muttersberg to Hohe Fraßen (1979 m) was planned (this expansion stage was not implemented).

In 1955 the construction of the cable car structures and the supports began. The cable car was designed as a shuttle cable car with two cabins for 15 + 1 people each. The drive (DC motor) was located in the mountain station.

Technical data of the original system

  • Cable height in the valley station: 681 m
  • Rope height in the mountain station: 1384 m
  • Difference in altitude: 703 m
  • Track length (horizontal length): 1461 m
  • Operating length ( inclined length ): 1615.5 m
  • three supports (26.21 m and 10 m height)
  • largest span: 653.7 m
  • mean slope: 48.1%
  • 2 vehicles with a capacity of 15 + 1 people or 1200 kg
  • Maximum travel speed 7 m / s
  • largest transport capacity per hour and direction: 150 people

opening

The official and ceremonial opening and church blessing of the Muttersberg cable car took place on October 14, 1956. The opening was held in the presence of the Governor of Vorarlberg, Ulrich Ilg .

First renovation

In 1991 the Muttersberg cable car was completely renovated for the first time as part of the existing cable car system. New cabins were purchased and the technical system was overhauled ( Steurer Seilbahnbau , Doren ), the electrical equipment and the signal system (Teichmann system) were rebuilt and brought up to the state of the art. The maximum transport capacity could be increased to 180 people / h.

The previous operating company ( Gesellschaft mbH ) was dissolved and a " community association for the Muttersberg passenger cable car, Bludenz-Nüziders" was founded (change of operator on January 1, 1994).

The reopening ceremony after the renovation took place on June 27, 1992. In addition to the church consecration, the cable car cabins were “ christened ” by Andrea Tratter, the “Missis Europa 1992”.

Second renovation

On the occasion of the second renovation of the Muttersbergseilbahn, which ran under the name “Muttersbergseilbahn neu” in 2001/2002, the mountain station was relocated a few meters uphill (around 15 meters in altitude on the Madeisakopf) and integrated into the newly built restaurant building (Alpengasthof). The aerial tramway system was replaced by a detachable group lift (8-person cabins) with a revolving hoisting rope.

As with the previous system, the drive station is located in the mountain station and the deflection station and tensioning device for the hoisting rope in the valley station. Instead of a tension weight, two hydraulic tension cylinders are now used. The number of service brakes and safety brakes has been increased from one to two each. The drive is no longer carried out directly by a direct current electric motor on the drive pulley, but via a hydrostatic drive (separately ventilated electric motor: ABB DMI 208P-MHA, oil pump: Sauer 90R075, oil motor: Poclain MS 35 2 G. Emergency drive: Cummins Diesel, B 3.9-C / 130).

Each time after the end of operations, the hoist rope needs to be fully reversed in order to park all the gondolas in the valley station.

The operation of the system was transferred to Muttersberg Seilbahn GmbH & Co KG subject to certain conditions. The Muttersberg Seilbahn GmbH & Co KG is part of the Silvretta Montafon Bergbahnen AG , St. Gallenkirch .

The cable car operates daily from around the end of April to the beginning of November, otherwise Friday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In the period around Christmas and New Year's Eve, operations are suspended due to revision work. During the operating hours of the railway, the valley station is served by city bus line 1.
