My Best Friend Is You is the second album by British singer Kate Nash . It was released on April 19, 2010 in the UK and a day later in the other countries. Originally, the title should be Crayon Full of Color , but was discarded due to similar titles at the time of publication. On April 13, 2010 was Nash guest in the broadcast Xposure radio station XFM DJ John Kennedy , in which she gave an interview played in each song of the album and was discussed.

backgrounds

Nash's claim was not to record a second Made of Bricks . She wanted to go new musical ways, the album should sound rougher and Nash wanted to try out new things such as spoken word passages, and co-producer and sound engineer Bernard Butler played a major role in the implementation of her ideas . When songwriting she let the girl groups of the 1960s and the 1990s punk bands inspired the album title My Best Friend Is You ( German : 're My Best Friend you ) refers to their grandparents, who have been married for 57 years.

The artwork for the album was created by the artist herself. She allowed herself to be influenced by Bauhaus art, but the deciding factor for the design of the front cover were graphics by an artist that only depicted body parts, but not faces. This is to express that as a woman one receives too little attention in society. This basic feminist theme can also be found in the lyrics of the album. The most extraordinary piece is Mansion Song , with which Nash deliberately wants to shock. The lyrics of the song are interspersed with swear words and are about groupies who let their stars treat them like dirt. The single Do-Wah-Doo is about being abandoned because of someone else.

reception

Allmusic's John Bush notes that Kate Nash presents herself very differently on the album than on its 2007 predecessor. The first half of the album offers very professionally produced pop soul, as it is popular in the 21st century, while the second half surprisingly fits better with the artist's songwriting. Jakob Rondthaler from laut.de sees it similarly , who describes pieces like Kiss That Grrrl or Do-Wah-Doo as "predictable", while he describes titles like I Just Love You More as "experimental". He sums up that the record is by no means homogeneous and can be quite exhausting to listen to in one piece, but that it is a "great album". BBC Music's Johnny Sharp, on the other hand, is less enthusiastic. The pleasantly melodic I've Got a Secret , the sweet Don't You Want to Share the Guilt or the punk I Just Love You More are quite original, but the album as a whole is a disappointment.
