The Mycenaean Commission is a research project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences that was set up in 1971 on the initiative of Fritz Schachermeyr . It has now been incorporated into the Institute for Oriental and European Archeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 2013 .

The Mycenaean Commission was set up to advance the study of Greek prehistory and early history , Minoan and Mycenaean Greece, and the so-called post-Mycenaean " Dark Ages " up to the time of Homer . The interdisciplinary nature is one of the most important concerns of the commission, archaeological , ancient historical as well as philological - Indo-European studies should be connected, for example on the basis of the Linear B texts. The commission is thus taking on more and more of the tasks of the Vienna Research Center for Mycenaeology . Currently, Sigrid Jalkotzy-Deger (chairwoman), Gerhard Dobesch (deputy chairman), Heiner Eichner , Susanne Hein hold Krahmer , Günther Hölbl , Hermann Hunger , Johannes Koder , Oswald Panagl and Gerhard Thür members of the Commission, in earlier films Vassos Karageorghis and Thomas G. Palaima .

In addition to general research, the commission manages the so-called “Schachermeyr Collection”. It is a collection of around 2000 ceramic fragments and some whole vessels that Schachermayer collected during his research time in the entire eastern Mediterranean area in order to build a study collection that can support academic teaching. The collection includes ceramic examples from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age . The collection is conditionally accessible to the general public. Several projects are being carried out within the Commission. A significant number of books are also published. Events in the form of colloquia and workshops are offered annually.
