Oswald Panagl

Oswald Panagl (born November 8, 1939 in Mauer near Vienna ) is an Austrian linguist and literary scholar as well as classical philologist and musicologist .

life and work

Panagl graduated from the Humanist High School in the XIII. Viennese district. He then studied Classical Philology , Indo-European Studies , Oriental Studies and German Studies at the University of Vienna . He also studied singing at the Vienna University of Music . He successfully completed both studies.

In 1976 Panagl received his habilitation. He taught German linguistics at the University of Munich , and since 1979 general and comparative linguistics at the University of Salzburg . After his retirement he was a visiting professor at the Mozarteum University of Music . Panagl also worked continuously as a music dramaturge on various stages, including the Salzburg State Theater , the Salzburg Festival , the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper as well as the Bayreuth Festival .

To Panagls research further belonging Mykenologie and specialties mainly of historical linguistics as etymology, semantic change, historical word formation, historical grammar of Indo-European languages (esp. Greek, Latin, Germanic languages, Sanskrit , Baltic languages), Historical syntax and style, but also topics such as language and music as well as opera and libretto research.

Panagl is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . His current project work includes a monograph on Richard Strauss and an investigation into political terms in the late Roman republic.
