Mykines ( Greek Μυκήνες ( f. Pl. )) Is a place in the west of the Argolis and is the seat of the district of the same name Mykines in the municipality of Argos-Mycenae . Until 1916 the place was called Charvati ( Greek Χαρβάτι ), after which it was named after the ancient citadel of Mycenae , 2 km away .
Worth seeing
In the modern place there are several souvenir shops, restaurants and guest houses, as well as camping sites along the main road. You can tell from some businesses that they are past their prime. Most of these shops started with the tourist boom since the 1970s, whereas the still very numerous visitors to the ancient site in modern Mycenae rarely stop. The first house on the square for a long time stands out as a place of interest: Belle Helene , Heinrich Schliemann's house . Founded in 1862 , Belle Helene has not only been visited by almost all well-known classical archaeologists over the decades , but also by many prominent people from politics and society in the western world.
