Myrtha Welti-Hunger (* 1945 in Chur ) is a Swiss teacher , lawyer and former politician .

Life

Welti took the mid-sixties to Zurich at the local university train for a secondary school teacher. In the 1970s she studied law at the Universities of Zurich and Geneva and graduated with a degree. She then worked as an assistant at the Law Department of the University of Zurich.

From 1981 to 1991 Welti was a research assistant at the General Secretariat of the Swiss People's Party (SVP). From 1985 to 1989 she lived in London with her husband, the diplomat Philippe Welti , and their children . From 1992 to 1994 she was the deputy general secretary, and in 1994 she succeeded Max Friedli as general secretary of the SVP. In 1995 she ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the National Council for SVP Bern . In the same year she resigned in protest against misogynist votes by SVP exponents from the Bernese cantonal party. In 1996 she resigned as General Secretary of the SVP and was replaced by Martin Baltisser .

Welti lived with her family in Bonn from 1996 to 1998 . She then worked as a freelance consultant. In 1999 she ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the National Council for SVP Graubünden . In 2000 she left the SVP. On April 4, 2001, she succeeded Linus von Castelmur as Secretary General of the Independent Expert Commission «Switzerland - Second World War» . From 2003 until her resignation at the end of 2009, she was a member of the University Council of the University of Zurich. She joined the Civil Democratic Party (BDP).

Welti has three children with her husband, including the singer Sophie Hunger .
