Career

At the age of 17, Myung was already in the first team of Maronbong , the strongest and most traditional club in North Korea. As a 22-year-old, the striker was part of the Korean Olympic team in 1948.

After suffering a serious leg injury in the Korean War , Myung moved to the coaching bench. After years of training in Moscow, Prague, Budapest and East Berlin, he became the coach of the North Korean national team in 1960 . Under his direction, he prepared his team intensively for the football World Cup in 1966 for 18 months , the entire squad then consisted of players who were members of the military. With this team, Myung achieved one of the greatest sensations in World Cup history when his team beat Italy 1-0 in the preliminary round and thus reached the quarter-finals. There, North Korea lost to Portugal 3: 5 after they had already led 3: 0 after 22 minutes.
