Nélio Isaac Sarmento is an East Timorese journalist and politician. He is a member of the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT) party. From 2012 to 2017 Sarmento was State Secretary for "Social Communication" ( Portuguese Secretário de Estado da Comunicação Social SECOMS , tetum Secretariu Estadu Komunikasaun Sosial SEKOMS ), who is also known as State Secretary for Media. From 2018 to 2020 he was State Secretary for Youth and Sport.

Career

Sarmento used to be news chief at Televisão de Timor Leste (TVTL), the state television broadcaster. On August 8, 2012, he became the new State Secretary for Media. His term of office included the establishment of a press council and the adoption of a code of honor for journalists in October 2013, as well as the attempt by the government to pass a media law in 2014 that would have required journalists to register, which was viewed by non-governmental organizations as an attack on press freedom. The country's Supreme Court stopped the law as unconstitutional.

Sarmento retained his post after the government reshuffle in 2015 under the new Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo . When the VII government took office in 2017, Sarmento left the cabinet. The government failed, however, and after the early elections in 2018 , the CNRT was once again a ruling party and Sarmento was sworn in as State Secretary for Youth and Sport on June 22nd.

Following the breakup of AMP 2020, members of the CNRT government were asked to resign from their posts. Sarmento followed suit on May 25th.
