Career

During the Indonesian occupation until 1999, Fernandes fought against the occupiers in the East Timorese resistance. Only then did he complete a law degree. From 2005 to 2011 Fernandes was President of the East Timorese Scout Movement .

In the first parliament of East Timor , Fernandes was a member of FRETILIN from 2001 to 2005. Here he was chairman of Committee B for Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security.

From July 26, 2005 to August 8, 2007, Fernandes was State Secretary for Youth and Sport, for which he had to legally vacate his seat in Parliament. He served under Prime Ministers Marí Alkatiri , José Ramos-Horta and Estanislau da Silva .

When Xanana Gusmão took office , Fernandes was replaced by Miguel Manetelu . Re-entry into parliament also failed because Fernandes was 27th on the party list, but FRETILIN only won 21 seats in the 2007 parliamentary elections in East Timor .

On December 5, 2007, Fernandes replaced the late FRETILIN MP Jacob Fernandes back in parliament. Here he became a member of the Commission for the Eradication of Poverty, Rural and Regional Development and Gender Equality (Commission E). In the parliamentary elections in 2012 Fernandes came not more.

Fernandes has been Deputy Secretary General of FRETILIN for several years. He is also a member of the National Security Council.
