Johann Heinrich Werner

Johann Heinrich Werner (born January 22, 1684 in Bamberg , † November 28, 1752 in Amberg ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman.

Life

Johann Heinrich Werner grew up in Bamberg and chose a spiritual career. In November 1715, the Bamberg Abbey of St. Jakob presented him to the parish of St. Martin in Amberg; In 1716 he became dean . In 1719 Werner was appointed electoral Bavarian councilor.

Werner promoted the cultivation of potatoes , distributed potatoes, taught them about potatoes and helped potatoes to become a popular food in the Upper Palatinate .

Johann Heinrich Werner established the Orphanage Foundation in Amberg in 1732 and had the first orphanage built, which was used as such until 1966. A memorial plaque on the old orphanage in Waisenhausgasse in Amberg reminds of this. Then a new building followed and the name was changed to Johann Heinrich Werner House. The youth welfare facility was closed in 2000 and then converted into a senior citizens' home run by the Wallmenich Haus vom BRK .

Johann Heinrich Werner held the parish of St. Martin Amberg until his death. His grave with epitaph is in the Church of St. Martin in front of the side altar of St. Helena .

Afterlife

The city of Amberg named Wernerstraße in the Trinity Quarter after him .

The potato fountain in Amberg in the inner courtyard between Hallplatz and Spitalgraben is a reminder of the promotion of potatoes as a folk food by Johann Heinrich Werner.
