Jacob Martins dos Reis Fernandes († September 22, 2007 in Darwin , Australia ) was a politician from East Timor . He was a member of the left-wing FRETILIN party .

Fernandes was the administrator of Hatulia sub- district for 10 years . Although he was a government employee of the Indonesian occupying power, he supported the East Timorese struggle for independence financially and was a member of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT). He has received threats for this since 1992. After the change of power in Indonesia in 1998, Fernandes organized the Forum Dialogue Masyarakat Ermera, Fodimer ( German Ermera People's Dialogue Forum ) to reconcile the population after more than 20 years of war of liberation. He also supported refugees who fled Maubara from the pro-Indonesian militia Besi Merah Putih (BMP) in February 1999. Some of them returned to Guiço in Maubara and were shot at on February 23. Fernandes denounced the local government's involvement in the attack in an interview. On April 10, Fernandes was stopped on the road to Gleno by Indonesian soldiers and members of the BMP. They opened fire on him, but Fernandes managed to escape. He went into hiding while his family were threatened by militias at their home in Dili . Stones were thrown at it several times. Amnesty reported that Fernandes was captured and murdered on May 17, according to a military report.

In the 2001 constituent assembly elections , Fernandes was elected MP for FRETILIN. Here he was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament by the parliamentarians.

During the riots in East Timor in 2006 , the house of Fernandes was burned down by opponents of FRETILIN in June.

In the parliamentary elections in East Timor on June 30, 2007 Fernandes was re-elected to the national parliament of East Timor over number 7 on the party election list. It met for the first time on July 30th. On August 27, Fernandes was taken to Darwin for medical treatment. He died on September 22nd. On December 5, 2007, José Manuel da Silva Fernandes replaced Fernandes as a FRETILIN member of parliament.
