Nitrogen ylides

Nitrogen ylides or N- ylides for short are chemical compounds. These are internal salts with carbon as the anion and nitrogen as the cation (i.e. a zwitterion). They are particularly reactive compounds which, in contrast to sulfur ylides and phosphorus ylides, are not capable of expanding octets and forming p π -d π bonds.

Manufacturing

The reaction of a quaternary ammonium salt (e.g. tetramethylammonium chloride 1 ) with n -butyllithium or phenyllithium yields the N -Ylide 2 :
