NAMRIGHTS , also NamRights (until December 31, 2010: National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), in German  Nationale Gesellschaft für Menschenrechte (NGfM) ) is a non-governmental organization (non-profit), which is committed to the observance of the worldwide applicable human rights and whose security is used in Namibia and worldwide. Its work is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a number of other human rights documents.

The abbreviation stands for "Namibian Rights and Responsibilities".

organization

The head office is located in the Namibian capital Windhoek . There are also six other regional offices in Oshakati , Rundu , Opuwo , Katima Mulilo , Eenhana and Mariental .

Due to the minor importance of the political opposition in Namibia, a small number of civil society actors play a major role. The NAMRIGHTS is one of the most conspicuous actors in the Namibian political landscape. Criticism of government failures, the practices of SWAPO officials and government politicians, and other political issues are taken up by the organization.

In November 2006, the organization filed a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court , including against former Namibian President Sam Nujoma . According to NAMRIGHTS, the reason for the lawsuit is Nujoma's refusal to comment on the fate of approx. 4,200 people who disappeared both during the liberation struggle and also during Nujoma's term of office (including in the course of the Caprivi conflict ), as well as the government's rejection, To have the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission investigate human rights violations during the liberation struggle in Namibia .

As a former president, Nujoma is protected from criminal prosecution in Namibia by the constitution, which means that he cannot be prosecuted nationally due to his immunity.
