The Di 1 series was a diesel-hydraulic locomotive for the Norges Statsbaner . The locomotive was the first mainline diesel locomotive in Norway and was built by Krupp in Essen with the serial number 2157.

history

Krupp had developed the diesel-hydraulic power transmission in the early 1930s. NSB ordered two locomotives in 1937 to test this technology. The delivery was delayed and so only one locomotive was delivered in 1942. Since the locomotive was supposed to be used in pairs, the machine delivered only had one driver's cab at one end. In use, this required turntables at the terminal stations. The locomotive was given the running number 601, so that lower numbers remain open in the numbering plan for additional steam locomotives.

The locomotive was initially used on the Bergensbane . Since the NSB employees first had to acquire the necessary knowledge for maintenance and possible uses, as well as the lack of spare parts, the locomotive was rarely used. After a few years it was taken out of service due to a diesel shortage and only returned to service in 1947. A decisive factor for many breakdowns was also the poor workmanship of the locomotive due to its manufacture during the war. The locomotive was delivered from the Oslo district to the Bergen district on December 20, 1945 and continued to be used on the Bergensbane. From 1952 she was used on the Dovrebane and given to the Trondheim district on October 20, 1952.

The locomotive brought the NSB important knowledge in use and for the further development of diesel operation. These findings led to the order for the Di 2 series in 1954 . The one-off remained the most powerful diesel locomotive of the NSB until the delivery of the Di 4 in the 1980s. On October 4, 1957, it was returned to the Oslo district, followed by operations on Gjøvikbanen and Kongsvingerbanen .

Whereabouts

The locomotive was taken out of service on July 24, 1959 and sold to Brødrene London as scrap .
