The Norwegian steam locomotive series NSB Type 1a was built in 1861 and 1865 as a saddle tank locomotive in a total of three copies by Robert Stephenson in Newcastle upon Tyne , England , with the serial numbers 1399, 1400 and 1615 for the Oslo – Kongsvinger (Kongsvingerbanen - KB) railway. The first two machines were delivered on May 21 and put into operation in 1862. The third locomotive followed on June 23, 1865 with the extension of the route from Kongsvinger to Magnor . The barrel axis was firmly attached to the frame.

Areas of application

Together with the three locomotives of the NSB Type 2a series , the five locomotives started running on the first state railway in Norway.

As early as 1862, the numbering of the first two locomotives was changed, which from then on was 1a 13 and 14 .

The locomotives are among the smallest Norwegian locomotives that were used in regular train operations. Two of the locomotives formally belonged to the Kongsvingerbane all along. No. 13 was transferred to Smaalensbanen on June 17, 1885 for the covering of local trains between Kristiania and Bekkelaget / Ljan.

Photos show that this type of locomotive was used outside of Kongsvingerbanen and Smaalensbanen, for example in Gudbrandsdalen and on the Ofotbane . During the construction work there, the locomotive 1a 13 was used for construction train services. It was awarded from Oslo to Narvik in 1901 and remained in use there until 1907. The laying of the rails began from Fagernes on August 26, 1901. During the summer of 1901 the locomotive drove several times a day on the Fagernes – Taraldsvik route, transporting coal, sleepers, rails and parts for the locomotive.

Whereabouts

Locomotives 13 and 18 were retired on March 26, 1915 and 14 on April 8, 1916. All locomotives were scrapped.
