The Norwegian steam locomotive series NSB Type 9a were 24 locomotives built between 1877 and 1882 by Beyer-Peacock and Nydqvist och Holm for use on various railway lines in Norway.

history

The Norwegian railway lines, which belonged to the state, were administratively independent units at the time . The locomotives, which are identical in construction, were marked either with their name, with consecutive numbers or with a prefixed letter that indicated the place of use, depending on the location. In addition, the numbering plan changed several times in the course of the procurement period and later.

It was initially used on the Smaalensbane , the Meråkerbane , the Eidsvold – Hamarbane and the Eidsvold – Ottabane . The first locomotives of this type were ordered from Beyer-Peacock on July 14, 1876 and delivered between 1877 and 1879. Other locomotives were manufactured under license from Nydqvist och Holm and delivered between 1879 and 1882. The first locomotive was decommissioned in March 1915, the last two, 9a 115 and 9a 116 , were not taken out of service until September 19, 1953.

Beyer-Peacock locomotives

Smaalensbanen SB S1-S8

On July 14, 1876, eight locomotives for the Smaalensbane were ordered from Beyer-Peacock, which were delivered in 1877. They had the serial numbers 1665–1672 and were designated as SB S1 to S8.

The number was changed as early as 1879, when the route designation SB and the letter S in front of the serial number were omitted. The locomotives were classified as 41 to 48 in the same order.

Locomotive no. 41 came to Hell – Sunnanbanen in 1911 and was given no. 128 in 1913.

Meråkerbanen - Magnus and Inge

On July 14, 1876, two locomotives for the Meråkerbane were ordered from Beyer-Peacock, which were delivered in 1877. They had the serial numbers 1673 and 1674 and were called Magnus and Inge .

In the delivery year 1877, the sorting into a numbering system took place, Magnus became No. 5 and Inge No. 6. In a further change of the company numbers in 1881 from No. 5 to No. 56 and in 1882 from No. 6 to No. 57 The last renumbering took place in 1911 - no. 56 became no. 116 and no. 57 became no. 117.

Eidsvold – Hamarbanen – Nidaros

A locomotive was ordered from Beyer-Peacock for the Eidsvold – Hamarbane and it was delivered in 1879. It had the serial number 1868 and was called Nidaros .

In the year of delivery, the locomotive was given No. 3, in October 1882 a change was made to No. 60, which was finally changed to 63 in 1893.

Trondheim District - Eystein

A locomotive was ordered from Beyer-Peacock for the Trondheim district and delivered in 1879. It had the serial number 1869 and was called Eystein .

In the year of delivery, the locomotive was given No. 4, around 1882 a change was made to No. 55, which was finally changed to 115 in 1911.

Nydqvist and Holm locomotives

Deliveries of the twelve licensed locomotives began in 1879. Like the English locomotives, these were first delivered to the autonomous railway administrations.

Eidsvold – Hamarbanen

The Eidsvold – Hamarbane received numbers 29 to 31 (Nohab 118 to 120/1879). They were put into operation in 1880.

Smaalensbanen

The Smaalensbane received the numbers 53 to 57 (Nohab 143 to 147/1881) and the numbers 58 to 60 (Nohab 148, 157 and 158/1882).

Oslo district

The Oslo district was assigned No. 60 (Nohab 158/1882) in 1882.

Meråkerbanen

No. 61 (Nohab 159/1882) was assigned to the Meråkerbane as the last locomotive in the series. It was the only one of the Nohab locomotives that was given a different number. In 1913 the no.61 became the no.129.

Number changes / inserts

During the procurement phase of the locomotives, numerous changes in the numbering of the locomotives began. The last number correction took place in 1913.

The locomotives have been moved between the different districts over the years. During their service time they were in Districts 1 - Kristiania - later Oslo (Smaalensbanen and Kongsvingerbanen ), 2 - Drammen ( Drammenbanen , Randsfjordbanen , Vestfoldbanen ), 3 - Hamar ( Hedmarksbanen , section Hamar - Tynset of the Rørosbane ), 4 - Trondheim (Meråkerbanen and section Tynset– Støren –Trondheim of the Rørosbane) and 7 - Kristiansand ( Setesdalsbanen and later parts of the Sørlandsbane ).

They were in use for different lengths of time. On March 26, 1915, the first locomotive from the Nohab series, No. 54, was parked and taken out of service. On February 19, 1923, the No. 47 was the first machine from the Beyer-Peacock series to quit service. No. 59 was the last Nohab locomotive to go out of service on September 21, 1949, and No. 115/116 were the last Beyer-Peacock locomotives in service until September 19, 1953.

The locomotive no. 59 was intended for the railway museum, but was scrapped after 1949 like all other copies.

Train accident

No. 57 derailed on January 30, 1898, when she drove into a landslide between Flornes and Hegra on the Meråkerbane. The stoker jumped out of the locomotive while the driver rolled the locomotive into the river. Both were only injured and survived.
