The New York City Transit Authority ( NYCTA , NYCT or TA for Transit Authority ) is an authority in the US state of New York that operates public transport in the city of New York . NYCTA is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York State and is the largest public transport authority in the United States , with around eight million journeys daily (2016: 5.6 million on weekdays on the subway and 2.4 million on buses) .

The NYCTA includes the following transit systems:

Originally there were three independent operators of subway networks in New York, two of which were in private hands and competed with one another. In 1953, the NYCTA was founded to unite these network systems under one roof.
