The Nederlandsch-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij ( NZASM , German  Dutch-South African Railway Company ) was a railway company in the former South African Republic , also known as the Transvaal Republic, which was dissolved years after the Second Boer War .

history

Route network

The railway company founded on June 21, 1887 had the task of creating a railway network in the Transvaal Republic and connecting it to the seaport on Delagoa Bay near today's Maputo without using British territory . The company's concession was linked to the completion of this connection before the end of 1894.

In the same year the chief engineer RAI Snethlage started the survey work from Komatipoort , but malaria and disputes with Portugal delayed the construction work. The NZASM therefore began the construction of the Johannesburg - Boksburg railway line , which went into operation on March 17, 1890 and was known as the Rand Tram . It served to transport coal from Boksburg to the Witwatersrand - gold mines south of Johannesburg, but also to transport the miners . The route was extended from Boksburg to Springs in October 1890 and from Johannesburg via Roodepoort to Krugersdorp in February 1891 . The route, which was originally laid out with a light superstructure, was given a normal superstructure from 1892 and connected to the railway network of the Orange Free State with the bridge over the Vaal near Vereeniging , which was completed in the same year .

The Pretoria – Lourenço Marques line was opened on November 2, 1894.

After negotiations between the Transvaal Republic, the Orange Free State and the British colonial administration , the continuous connection between Pretoria and Pietersburg was opened in 1899 . At that time the chief engineer JA van Kretschmar van Veen jun. a workforce that consisted of 1,770 Dutch and ex-Dutch, 4,477 South Africans, most of whom were black, and 1,615 from 26 other countries.

The NZASM obtained locomotives mainly from German locomotive factories, as the South African Republic worked closely with the then German Reich in political and economic terms.

Second Boer War

Even before mobilization for the Second Boer War in the Republic of Transvaal was ordered on September 28, 1899 , the Executive Council of the Republic made the railways, employees and rolling stock of the NZASM available to the General Command of the Armed Forces. With the occupation of Pretoria by the British, the entire property of the railway was confiscated on September 12, 1900 after 1,400 employees and relatives were sent back to Europe by the British authorities.

The railway, along with other railways from the conquered areas, was placed under military administration as Imperial Military Railways (IMR) and transferred to the Central South African Railways in 1902 .

The NZASM company was officially dissolved on October 13, 1908.
