information 2D platformer, in which a ninja has to evade his enemies with skillful maneuvers, but cannot destroy them.

N is a 2D platformer from the Canadian development team Metanet Software . It is available free of charge on the Internet and is only available in English. According to the developers, the platform game is based heavily on Lode Runner .

The game is based on Flash and was written in ActionScript . The current version is 2.0.

scope

The game has 500 levels in the current version , which are divided into 100 episodes of 5 levels. Initially, only episodes 00, 10 ..., 80 and 90 are available. If an episode is successfully completed, the next episode will be unlocked. The aim of the game is to complete all 100 episodes.

Row 8 with episodes 80 to 89 occupies a special position compared to the other episode series, as it consists entirely of maps created by players. In addition, 157 so-called user levels created by players are included in the scope of delivery, which can be played individually in an extra mode, regardless of normal game progress.

procedure

You play a ninja . The aim of each individual level is to reach the exit after the corresponding opener has been activated. In addition to various opponents, primarily robotic drones, mines and guns, the available time quota is a difficulty. At the beginning of an episode, this amounts to 90 seconds. If you collect gold pieces in the game, the possible playing time is extended by 2 seconds.

Ned

Ned

Ned (of N - Ed itor) is the level editor , which is included in N. The levels of the 100 episodes integrated in N were also created with Ned. Ned also has a debug mode in which the self-made levels can be tested or levels downloaded from the Internet can be played.

A level is not saved as a file in Ned, but can be copied out of a text field in debug mode. The code available in this way can be read and changed.

criticism

The main criticism of N is its simplicity. So there are only 8 different enemies and objects. The outdated 2D graphics are faced with an excessive load on the hardware, which is mainly caused by the programming environment (Flash and ActionScript).

The level format of N allows many changes that bring undocumented programming errors or inaccuracies to light, so that experienced users can consciously incorporate errors in levels they have created themselves. Metanet has been criticized for doing too little to counter such abuse. Fans respond that the opportunities that open up intensify the gaming experience.

Also, the level editor Ned is difficult or impossible to use for many inexperienced users, since it is not possible to load and save level files. With version 1.5 this should be possible.

Modifications and successors

NReality

NReality is a modification based on N 1.4. The NReality modification was programmed by a member of the community ("Unreality") and offers various innovations. For example, there are new opponents and there is the option of creating modifications for the game yourself. For example, the size of the small character can be changed. N-Reality 100 also includes more maps and two new modes.
