Na Dae-yong (* 1556 in Naju; † 1612 ) was a Korean military officer and ship designer in the 16th century. He is best known as the builder of the so-called turtle ship , which proved to be one of the most effective weapons of the Korean naval forces during the Imjin War between 1592 and 1598.

Life and military career

Na Dae-yong was born in 1556 in the city of Naju, Jeolla Province . Details about his life are not known. Na successfully completed his military examination in 1583, before he entered the service of the Jeolla Left Marine Division under Admiral Yi Sun-sin in 1591 together with his cousin Na Chi-yong with the rank of lieutenant .

Na worked in the Left Jeolla Division as a ship designer who secured a place in Korean military history with the design and construction of the Geobukseon . He also fought as an officer on the war front during the Japanese invasion of Korea ; In one of his first entries in his war diaries, Yi Sun-sin mentions how Na was injured by a Japanese arquebus ball during the sea battle of Sachon , but survived.

Na was appointed magistrate of Kangjin in 1594, and after the war he continued to develop new combat ships, based in part on his Gebukseon design. In 1611 Na was appointed naval commander of Kyung-gi province, but died of the long-term effects of his war injuries before he could take up the post.

Modern views

In the west, Yi Sun-sin was credited for a long time as the actual creator of the turtle ship , with Nas role as its designer being largely neglected.

In his honor, a Chang Bogo-class diesel submarine , the SS-069 , was named after him in 2000 .

Na Dae-yong appears as a major supporting character in the Korean historical drama series Immortal Admiral Yi Soon-shin , played by Lee Sang-in. Well there is portrayed as an enthusiastic person with exuberant ingenuity, whose unconventional way of thinking is ultimately responsible for the conception of the turtle ship.
