Naga Hammadi barrage

The Naga Hammadi barrage is a dam on the Nile . It is located around 165 kilometers north of Luxor and 650 kilometers south of Cairo downstream from Nag Hammadi at an altitude of 77 meters above sea level.

In addition to the new building, two more barrages were built, which are planned to improve the water and power supply in Upper Egypt . The dam system was completed after six years of construction in May 2008 and cost around 330 million euros. The dam replaces the existing dam, about 4 kilometers further upstream, which was built between 1927 and 1930.

The entire structure is around 330 m wide and consists of a weir system with seven weirs , a hydroelectric power station and two locks . The main pillars of the weir system are up to 138 m long and 17.50 m wide. Between these pillars extend between 4 and 1 m thick, 17.0 m wide and 13.5 m high partition walls. The system is designed for a maximum flow rate of 7,000 m³ / s. The locks are each 229 m long and 17 m wide. You overcome the difference in altitude of 8 m in 11 minutes. The lock chambers are around 170 m long.

The power plant has four bulb turbines with a water volume of 430 m³ / s and a bottleneck capacity of 64 megawatts. The standard work capacity is expected to be sufficient to supply 200,000 Egyptian households with electricity.

The dam was built by Bilfinger Berger , Orascom and VINCI .
