Naira Gelashvili , Georgian ნაირა გელაშვილი, English Naira Gelashvili (born October 28, 1947 in Sighnaghi , Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Georgian author , Germanist , translator and political activist . She is one of the most important living authors in Georgia.

Life

Naira Gelashvili was born in Eastern Georgia and has lived in Tbilisi since 1954 . She studied German at the Tbilisi State University until 1973. From 1975 to 1981 she taught German studies there, from 1982 to 1990 she worked as a lecturer and translator in the State Translators' College.

In 1993 she founded the center for cultural exchange “ The Caucasian House ” in Tbilisi. From 1992–94 she was adviser to the Georgian President on cultural policy and national minorities. In 1982 she received the Georgian Writers' Association's "Best Story of the Year" award.

She published numerous novels, short stories and poems, she also translated a. a. the work of Rainer Maria Rilke in Georgian - as well as Friedrich Hölderlin , Georg Trakl or Paul Celan .

She was married to the author and philosopher Giwi Margwelaschwili from 1970 to 1980. They have a daughter together.
