Nakamura Utaemon VI. ( Japanese 六 代 目 中 村 歌 右衛門 , Rokudaime ~ ; born January 20, 1917 as Fujio Kawamura ( 河村 藤 雄 , Kawamura Fujio ); died March 31, 2001 ) was a Japanese kabuki performer and artistic director of the Kabukiza in Ginza , Tokyo . He was a prominent member of an ancient family of kabuki performers from the Keihanshin (Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe) region.

Surname

"Nakamura Utaemon" was a stage name with strong cultural and historical connotations. "Utaemon" describes the personal status as an actor. This title may only be accepted after the death of the previous sponsor and only under restrictive succession regulations.

Life

Utaemon VI was the son of Nakamura Utaemon V. He came from the sixth generation of a family of well-known kabuki performers. The name "Utaemon VI" was not formally proclaimed until 1951 in a ceremony in the Kabukiza in Tokyo.

In his long career he played in many different roles. However, his most famous performances were female Oyama (Onnagata) roles.

Awards

In 1968 Nakamura was recognized by the Japanese government as a living national treasure (人間 国宝, Ningen kokuhō), as a “bearer of important irreplaceable cultural assets”. In 1979, after Nakamura Kichiemon I , he was awarded the Cultural Order as the second kabuki performer .
