Nali

Nali (* 1798 in Celahul ; † 1855 in Istanbul ) was a Kurdish poet , interpreter , mathematician and linguist in the Ottoman Empire . His real name was Mele Xidrî Ehmedî Šaweysî Mikâʾîlî. Through his poetry, he was instrumental in developing the Kurdish Sorani into a literary language.

Not much is known about his life. After training at a madrasa , Nali went on study trips to many cities such as Sanandaj , Mahabad , Halabja and Sulaimaniya . Around 1830 he made a pilgrimage to Mecca and on the way back visited Damascus , where he lived for several years. Later he went to the Ottoman capital Istanbul , where he met many Kurdish intellectuals and writers. In 1837 the Kurdish principality of the Baban in what is now northern Iraq was destroyed by the Ottoman Empire , which motivated him to write poetry. In addition to Kurdish , he also spoke and wrote fluently in Arabic and Persian . His poems were published in what is now the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan .
