Nam Duck-woo (born April 22, 1924 in Seoul , † May 18, 2013 there ) was a South Korean politician . From 1980 to 1982 he was the 14th Prime Minister of South Korea .

Life

Nam was born in a suburb of Seoul . After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Kookmin University in 1950 , he worked at the Bank of Korea . In 1954 he resumed his academic career and received a Masters in Economics from Seoul National University in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1961. in Economics from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater . He was a professor of economics at Sogang University before being brought into politics by Park Chung-hee .

In 1969, at the age of 45, he became the youngest finance minister in the history of South Korea and remained so for five years. He is considered a central figure during the rapid economic development of South Korea. From 1974 to 1978 he was Deputy Prime Minister responsible for economic policy in the industrial development of South Korea. In September 1980 he became Prime Minister under President Chun Doo-hwan , first executive and from September 22nd regular. In early 1982 he was replaced in this position by Yoo Chang-soon . In 1983 he became head of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), which he remained until 1991.

He then worked as a political advisor and advised Park Chung-hee's daughter , Park Geun-hye , who has been President of South Korea since 2013 , before the presidential election in 2007 . In 2007, however, she was still defeated in the party primary against Lee Myung-bak .

On May 18, 2013, he died of testicular cancer at the age of 89 .

Nam was married and had three children.
