The 17th presidential election in South Korea took place on December 19, 2007 . From the choice was Lee Myung-bak of the Hannara Party ( 한나라당 , Hannara-dang, Grand National Party) emerged as the winner, bringing the Conservatives back into the first time in ten years Blue House to the Office of the President, may recover. Lee defeated the candidate of the liberal Yeollin-uri party ( 열린 우리당 , Yeollin-uri-dang, Our Open Party), Chung Dong-young , who had served as minister for the association under the incumbent President Roh Moo-hyun Democratic Party candidate Lee In-je and the independent Conservative candidate Lee Hoi-chang with the largest lead over the runner-up since the reintroduction of direct elections in 1987. Lee was still being investigated for involvement in an illegal stock deal. The investigation had to be completed before the inauguration. Nothing could be proven to him at the time.
