Nancy Folbre

Nancy Russell Folbre (born July 19, 1952 ) is an American feminist economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Folbre studied philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin . After graduating as a Bachelor of Arts in December 1971, she continued her studies at the university and in August 1973 did her Master of Arts in Latin American Studies. She then moved to the University of Massachusetts , where she received her Ph.D. graduated in economics. Until 1980 she took a scholarship at the Economic Growth Center at Yale University before moving on to Bowdoin College as an assistant professor . In 1983 she moved to The New School until she returned to the University of Massachusetts as an Associate Professor in 1985 . There she was appointed full professor in 1991.

The focus of Folbres' work lies at the intersection between economics and feminist theory. The focus is on studies of work outside the labor markets such as family activities, housework, raising children or care activities - regardless of whether these are remunerated. Her courses range from introductory lectures on economics to special lectures on political economy in terms of race or gender .

From 2003 to 2004 she was President of the International Association for Feminist Economics .
