Nancy Rothwell studied physiology at the University of London and received her PhD in 1979 from Queen Elizabeth College, now King's College London . She was then a postdoctoral fellow at St George's Hospital Medical School until 1982 . From 1982 to 1991 she was a Research Fellow of the Royal Society at various institutions, most recently at the Department of Physiological Sciences at the University of Manchester , where she became a lecturer in 1991 and a professor in 1994.

Rothwell conducts research in the field of cytokines and especially on interleukins of the interleukin-1 family ( interleukin-1β ) and their importance in brain research. Her work in neuroscience has resulted in significant advances in the understanding and treatment of brain damage, stroke and head injuries.

In July 2010 she was elected President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester. In addition, she has held numerous research policy roles in UK academic and government bodies, as well as in companies, including pharmaceuticals group AstraZeneca . From 2000 to 2004 she was President of the British Neuroscience Association (BNA). In 2009 she was the founding president of the Royal Society of Biology and is now an honorary member of that society.

In various media she often expresses herself on general questions of science and research policy.
