Nandini Satpathy (born June 9, 1931 in Cuttack , † August 4, 2006 in Bhubaneswar ) was an Indian politician and author.

Political career

Nandini Satpathy is one of the few women in Indian politics who reached high offices without being part of a politician dynasty or having been patronized by men. As a member of the Indian National Congress party , she was elected to the Rajya Sabha for Orissa . Between 1966 and 1969 and again in 1970 she was Minister of Information for the Federal Government, in between she was Minister of State at the Prime Minister and Minister without Portfolio.

Their close association with Indira Gandhi paid off when she for "1972 Chief Minister " (Prime Minister of a federal -state) was proposed by Orissa. In March 1973 the state was placed directly under the President's authority for one year, but Satpathy was regained in March 1974. In 1974 she led the Indian National Congress to a victory in the elections for the state assembly (federal chamber). She remained in office until 1976 and is considered a successful Chief Minister in Orissa. After the fall of Indira Gandhi in 1977, Nandini Satpathy left the party and joined the Janata Party . With the end of the Janata government in 1980, Satpathy also left this party and was re-elected as an independent candidate in the same year. In 1985 she founded the regional Jagrata Orissa party ; she was elected as the only candidate for parliament. In 1990 she returned to the Indian National Congress .

Literary career

Nandini Satpathy was a well-known Oriya writer, her works have been translated into several languages. In 1998 she received the Sahitya Bharati Samman Award for her outstanding contribution to regional literature .
