The nanoTruck was an exhibition vehicle and the core element of the mobile information and dialogue initiative of the same name on nanotechnology of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

overview

From 2004 to 2015, the double-decker nanoTruck was on the road for around 220 days a year at up to 100 locations throughout Germany and offered theoretical and practical access to nanotechnology with an exhibit show, nano-cinema, multimedia terminals and multifunctional presentation and event areas. Around 110,000 visitors were reached every year. The initiative, launched in 2004 on the occasion of the “Year of Technology” , was reissued twice in differently conceptualized and expanded campaigns (2008 and 2011). The last tour started in April 2011 under the campaign title “nanoTruck - Meeting Point Nanoworlds” and ended on March 31, 2015 as planned.

Goals of the nanoTruck initiative

The basic idea of the campaign was to bring information about cross-sectional technology directly to people. The initiative was intended to inform the public at an early stage about the opportunities and potential risks of nanotechnology, promote their ideas and show new perspectives for a successful career in a promising technology field. Integrated into the Federal Government's “Nanotechnology 2015 Action Plan”, the nanoTruck initiative set itself the goal of comprehensible information and communication about one of the key technologies of the 21st century. As a nationwide dialogue initiative on nanotechnology, the nanoTruck was aimed particularly at young people and schoolchildren. The focus of the nanoTruck event and information program was on imparting knowledge about nanotechnological innovations in various fields of application, about the accompanying risk research, networks, subject-specific courses and training opportunities. In workshops , internships, lectures and dialogue events, especially for young people, consumers and small and medium-sized companies, the involvement with nanotechnology in school, at home, in the company and at work should be promoted. As an instrument of the federal government's high-tech strategy , the aim of the information campaign was to make a contribution to strengthening Germany as a location in the competition for the most innovative ideas in the field of the key technology nanotechnology.

Campaign history

Journey into the nanocosmos (2004)

The first nanoTruck in July 2004

The BMBF initiative “nanoTruck” celebrated its premiere at the kick-off event for the “Year of Technology” on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin on January 28, 2004. Originally, the campaign was only planned for one year. In response to the great success, the BMBF extended the initiative for three more years beyond the period of the “Year of Technology”. Within a few weeks of the start of the nanoTruck, the tour was already fully booked for 99 appointments nationwide - including an appointment abroad in Brussels. In the first year of the campaign, over 107,000 people visited the nanoTruck.

Nanocosmos - The World of Smallest Dimensions (2005–2007)

From 2005 to 2007 the “nanoTruck” initiative was continued unchanged under the concept of the original year. The exhibition vehicle used during the first campaign tour until the end of 2007 differed significantly from the successor models, both technically and in terms of design. The side walls could already be extended back then, so that the first nanoTruck offered space for a partially interactive exhibition, laser show, multimedia presentations, exhibition tours, lectures and discussion rounds on approx. 60 m² of exhibition and event space. Right from the start, the roadshow vehicle also aroused interest in other European countries, so that in addition to the regular tour schedule in Germany, three visits to the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland were realized. From 2005 to 2007 around 329,000 people visited the nanoTruck at 396 locations.

High tech from the nano cosmos (2008-2010)

The nanoTruck at the Ideas Park in Stuttgart in May 2008

The conceptually and technically revised second campaign of the BMBF initiative “nanoTruck” had its first appearance at the didacta education fair in Stuttgart on February 19, 2008. The new exhibition vehicle could no longer only be seen sideways, but also upwards drive out, increasing the total area of the truck by over 30 square meters. With the new second floor, 94 m² of action space was now available, which was used on the one hand for an expanded exhibit, nano-cinema with projector and screen on the upper floor and a laboratory area in the entrance area. The vehicle was now adapted to the basic colors of the corporate design of the BMBF and the high-tech strategy for Germany. The didactic communication of nanotechnology was more clearly the focus. Under the motto "Sensitize - Inform - Qualify" , the "nanoTruck" campaign was aimed specifically at interaction and dialogue. For this purpose, workshops and internships were offered especially for schoolchildren. For this purpose, compared to the previous campaign, the average downtime at the locations was increased from one to two to two to three days. During the second campaign tour, stays abroad could again be realized, this time in France, the Czech Republic and Belgium. At the end of the second campaign, there were a total of 28 international inquiries for the nanoTruck. In principle, however, deployments of the nanoTruck abroad are the exception. As a rule, they only take place in the context of European science and education events. In the period from February 2008 to December 2010, around 344,000 people visited the nanoTruck at 307 locations.

"NanoTruck - meeting point nanoworlds" (since 2011)

The nanoTruck at the open day at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in July 2011

The third nanoTruck campaign started on April 4, 2011 at the Hanover Fair with a further revised design and event concept and ended on schedule on March 31, 2015. The corporate design of the BMBF and the high-tech strategy of the federal government was used in the exterior design of the third and last nanoTruck although retained. But especially the imagery, the laboratory area and the exhibit show in the interior have been redesigned. Outwardly, the new “key visual” of the “Treffpunkt Nanowelten” campaign attracted attention. On display was the Rosensweig structure of a ferrofluid that is already being used successfully in nano-medicine (use of iron oxide-containing nanoparticles in the treatment of certain brain tumors). The equipment inside the special exhibition vehicle also included a compact tabletop scanning electron microscope , which was used in particular in school workshops. Even more than in the previous campaign, the nanoTruck concept III was geared towards interaction and dialogue and thus responded to the changed social framework. The public perception of nanotechnology was shaped by the increased presence of the topic of nanotechnology in the media and the significant increase in products influenced by nanotechnology. The third “edition” of the “nanoTruck” initiative addressed the increased risk perception and the increased need for information on the part of consumers in relation to “nanoproducts” by addressing these concerns directly and transferring them to an open, transparent and fact-based dialogue. The population was encouraged to actively and sustainably participate in the current and future discourse.
