Narcotic is a song by the German rock band Liquido . It was released on August 31, 1998 as the first single from the album Liquido , which was released a few months later . The single sold more than eight million times worldwide and reached high placements in the top 10 of the single charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . Known feature of the song is the concise Keyboard - reef .
Wolfgang Schrödl began typing in his Heidelberg apartment in 1996 . The previous owner's modified sounds were available on his second-hand Roland D70 , which made him play the melodies almost automatically. The band then sent the song on a demo mixtape to various record companies and received initial positive feedback, but no label wanted to release this out-of-date title. It was not until 1998 that Virgin Records offered - after another recording and production - to give the band a chance. It rose to number 87 in the German single charts and increased its position to number 3. In Austria it reached number 1, in Switzerland number 2. The song was a Europe-wide success and also reached other chart placements in addition to the German-speaking countries, including the top 10 in Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway.
The DJ duo Younotus released a cover of the original in 2019, which reached number 16 in the German single charts. Under the pseudonym Senex, Schrödl also appears in this version alongside the Dutch musician Janieck as a singer.
