Live and act

The exact dates of birth and death of Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Hampe are missing, his biological parents remain unknown. He was raised by the stepfather JH Schumacher.

At the age of 19, Hampe began working as a painter at the Carl Friedrich Mertins company in Bremen. Thanks to private sponsors, he also learned painting at the painting and drawing school of Friedrich August Brandes and Carl Baumbach.

Since September 1827, Hampe studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden . In 1830 he received a grant to “continue and complete his studies as a portrait painter”.

From 1833 Hampe worked in Bremen, after which he came to Rome, visiting Salzburg on the way , where he portrayed the Archbishop of Salzburg, Augustin Johann Joseph Gruber , Bologna and Florence. Then he came to Innsbruck , where he married the Roman Maria Aloisia Ferrari. Hampe returned to Rome around 1840, where he founded a studio. Hampe sent genre pictures from Rome to Bremen for sale.

In the period from 1838 to 1847, Hampe corresponded with his patron Werner Ellerhorst, later director of the Sparkasse Bremen. From 1845 to 1847 Hampe lived in Bremen again, after which he planned to move to Rahden near Minden , but his application for naturalization was rejected.

At the end of 1847 he returned to Rome, where he met the German Romans in the Antico Caffè Greco . There is almost no definite information about his further life. In the report of the Kunsthalle Bremen from 1862 he is described as deceased.

Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Hampe created genre pictures and portraits in particular, and more rarely landscapes and city images.
