The Three Sisters rocks in the Blue Mountains are part of the Narrabeen Group.

The Narrabeen Group is a geological formation in Australia in the northern Sydney Basin . The Sydney Basin is a sedimentary basin that extends from the south coast of New South Wales to central Queensland in Australia. The Sydney Basin is part of a larger geological basin of Sydney - Gunnedah -Bowen Basin.

Emergence

The Narrabeen Group forms a stratigraphic formation towards the end of the Permian to the Early Triassic . It was formed by sedimentation of rock debris from the New England areas and quartz from the Lachlan river basin , which mixed together. The group consists of clastic , quartz and clay-bound sandstones, conglomerate and slate rocks . Plants, fish and amphibious animals are partially fossilized in these rocks .

The red and green slates of the Narrabeen Group seal over the sandstone bodies and the slate of Bald Hill, which forms the uppermost layer of the Narrabeen Group, forms a regional water-blocking layer.

The younger stratigraphic formation of the Hawkesbury sandstones settled over the Narrabeen Group .

The rocks of the Narrabeen Group formed the Three Sisters , in the Blue Mountains . The valleys of the Blue Mountains were formed by the erosion and weathering processes of this deposited rock. These rocks also emerge at various locations in the Sydney Basin, such as on Long Reef near Narrabeen and Broken Bay .
