Narrow Water Castle ( Irish Caisleán an Chaoil , Ulster-Scots : Narra Wattèr ) is a ruined castle near Warrenpoint in County Down, Northern Ireland . The residential tower with a small bawn ( curtain wall ) from the 16th century is on the A2 state road and on the banks of the Newry River , which flows into Carlingford Lough about 1.6 km south . Narrow Water Castle passed into the hands of the state in 1956. It is a State Care Historic Monument in the townland of Narrow Water in the District of Newry, Morne and Down .

history

In 1212 was Hugh de Lacy , the first Earl of Ulster , on the estate a Donjon build to attacks on the city Newry to prevent from the river. The residential tower and bawn were built in the 1560s. It is a residential tower typical of all of Ireland between the 14th and the beginning of the 17th century. This type of building, usually with a rectangular floor plan and three or more stories, contained a series of stacked rooms with stairs, soffits and toilets, skillfully hidden in the approximately 1.5 meter walls or sometimes in protruding corner turrets.

The original building was destroyed in the Irish Rebellion in 1641 .

Today boat tours past the castle are offered in the summer months.

On 27 August 1979 18 soldiers were British Army during the stop of Warrenpoint the IRA killed at Narrow Water Castle. It was the attack with the most deaths that the IRA carried out on the British Army in the course of the Northern Ireland conflict.

The proposed Narrow Water Bridge was to be built south of the castle, but in July 2013 Louth County Council announced that the tender had shown bid prices well above the sums available. Therefore the project was postponed.
