Narsaarsuk [ nɑˈsːɑːsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Narssârssuk ; Inuktun Narraarruk [ nɑˈχːɑːχːu (k) ]) is a desolate, fallen Greenlandic settlement in the district of Qaanaaq in the Avannaata communia .

location

Narsaarsuk is located on the south bank of Bylot Sound at the mouth of Narsaarsuup Kuua . Thule Air Base is 18 km to the northeast . The nearest civilian place still inhabited today is Qaanaaq 113 km north.

history

Narsaarsuk was once inhabited sometime in the 19th century. The place of residence belonged to the Akunnaarmiut group . In 1918, Narsaarsuk ceased to exist for a long time. In 1968 a Boeing B-52 equipped with B28 atomic bombs crashed north of Narsaarsuk into Bylot Sound (see crash of a B-52 near Thule Air Base in 1968 ). The area was radioactively contaminated with plutonium . In 1987 a warehouse was set up in Narsaarsuk because around ten families lived and hunted there in winter.
