Qeqertarsuaq [ qɜˌqɜtːɑsːuɑq ] (according to the old spelling K'eĸertarssuaĸ ; Inuktun Qikertarraaq [ qiˌkɜχtɑχːɑː (q) ]) is a waste fallen Greenland settlement in the district Qaanaaq in the Avannaata Come Unia .

location

The place is in the east of the island of the same name ( Danish Herbert Ø ) about 23 km west of Qaanaaq . Murchison Sound runs between the two places .

history

Qeqertarsuaq was co-founded with Qaanaaq in 1953 when the residents of Uummannaq (Dundas) were forcibly relocated because of the construction of Thule Air Base . A smaller part settled on the western bank of Murchison Sound in / on Qeqertarsuaq. In 1953 the place had 28 inhabitants. In 1960 there were 37 residents in Qeqertarsuaq and in 1970 there were 51. In 1988, it was decided to depopulate and close Qeqertarsuaq, as well as Moriusaq and Qeqertat . In 2005 the last inhabitants left the place. Today Qeqertarsuaq is only used for hunting in summer.

Population development

The population of Qeqertarsuaq has declined since the beginning of the population measurements in individual places in the late 1970s. In the end only a handful of people lived in the village.
