Narthang is a monastery belonging to the Kadam School, the first Sarma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism . The village of Narthang in the Qumig municipality is located about 15 km west of Shigatse in Tibet , People's Republic of China . The monastery was founded in 1153 by Tumtön Lodrö Dragpa , a disciple of Sharawa .
Together with the monasteries of Shalu , Sakya and Trashilhünpo , it is one of the four large monasteries in the Tsang area. Along with the Potala in Lhasa and Dege Parkhang in Derge, it is one of the three important traditional Tibetan printing sites . His block print editions of Kanjur and Tanjur from the Tibetan Tripitaka are famous .
